Arranging home care for the first time can feel daunting as there are so many things to consider when trying to make the best decision for your loved one. At Bright Care, weโ€™ve been arranging home care since 2009ย and are experts at supporting families going through the process. We understand that finding the right support is about much more than simply managing logistics. Here are four key things we think you should consider when looking for home care:

1. Expertise and experience

You should make sure the home care provider has the expertise to handle sensitive medical and personal needs safely.ย

  • Regulatory compliance – Check they are fully regulated by the official bodies; the Care Quality Commission in England and the Care Inspectorate in Scotland. You can look up inspection reports online and check their scores.ย
  • Training standards – How does the provider train their staff? Do they have a dedicated training programme? Look for companies who invest in ongoing professional development for their carers.ย

2. Consistency of care

Home care is about human connection and building strong relationships between clients and carers.

  • Relationships – Ask providers how they match clients with carers. Find out if they rely on agency staff or if they employ their own teams. You need to know whether your loved one will see the same regular carers week to week.
  • Consistency – Make sure the provider prioritises building long-term relationships between carers and clients.ย

3. Personal service

For a care package to work well, it needs to be tailored to the individual needs of the client. Their personality, needs, interests and hobbies should all be taken into consideration as part of the care plan.

  • Local management – ย Look for a care provider with a strong local branch team. This means someone is nearby and can respond quickly to care needs.ย
  • Tailored support – Find out how long carers visit their clients. We believe that supporting a loved one isnโ€™t just about personal care, itโ€™s about bringing joy and companionship to their lives.ย ย

4. Third party validation

Itโ€™s important to spend time exploring how a care provider is viewed by others.ย

  • Online reviews – Look at what customers say about the services they have received from the provider. Real life testimonials are an important part of the decision making process.
  • Industry awards – Has the care provider won any awards in the industry? External validation is a strong indicator of the quality of care provided and the staff culture.

At Bright Care, weโ€™re here to bring joy to later years.ย

  • We are experts in elder care. We focus exclusively on caring for people in later life and have years of experience delivering specialised care and offering trusted advice.
  • We work exclusively for private clients who are paying for the care themselves. This means we can deliver care with excellence and maintain uncompromisingly high standards in recruitment and training.
  • All our visits are two hours or longer. We donโ€™t do short โ€˜pop-inโ€™ calls because we prioritise quality time and building relationships with the same regular, carefully matched Bright Carers.
  • We believe in a local approach. We have local offices, run by local managers who hire local Carers, allowing us to respond quickly and offer a truly personalised service while providing uncompromising support to our amazing teams.

Every Carer starts their career with a week of in-person onboarding at our Bright Care Training Academyย and benefits from ongoing training and professional development.
