Helping Ed, who is living with Dementia, attend his Granddaughterโ€™s wedding.

At Bright Care, we are committed to bringing joy to later life and believe a dementia diagnosis shouldnโ€™t be a barrier to enjoying important family milestones. When Jon got in contact with Bright Care about arranging respite care so his dad could attend his granddaughterโ€™s wedding in Dundee, Care Manager Danielle and Carer Lynda were delighted to help support the family so they could all enjoy the special day. We spoke to Danielle, Lynda and Jon about their experience.

Danielle Marr, Care Manager, Scottish Borders:

Jon and Caroline got in touch with Bright Care as they were looking for respite care to help with a family wedding in Dundee. Ed, Jonโ€™s dad, has had a stroke and has early stages of dementia but really wanted to be there to celebrate his granddaughterโ€™s wedding.

After speaking to Jon on the phone, I went out to meet the family to discuss what care they needed for Ed. Jon and Caroline really wanted Ed to be there and have the peace of mind that he was being really well cared for. As Jon and Caroline had lots of bridal party duties, they were looking for support with Edโ€™s transport and wellbeing throughout the day. This included help with travel to and from the venue, an overnight stay in the hotel, personal care, medication management and dementia support.

I knew our Carer Lynda would be an ideal match for Ed and so arranged an introduction at Edโ€™s home before the wedding so they could get to know each other.

Lynda accompanied Ed on the journey to Dundee the day before the ceremony, staying in the same hotel so she was able to provide overnight support if needed. On the day of the wedding, she helped Ed get ready and remained by his side throughout the event. This enabled Ed to participate fully in the celebrations and meant the whole family could relax and enjoy the wedding knowing he was in safe hands.

The wedding was a huge success and it was a real privilege to see Ed enjoy his granddaughterโ€™s wedding day, surrounded by his family.

Lynda, Care Assistant, Scottish Borders:

On the day leading up to the wedding, Ed admitted feeling a little nervous about the big day, he really wanted everything to go well on such an important family occasion. I was there to support him and provide the reassurance he needed. Once he saw his granddaughter, his nerves were soon forgotten and he was filled with pride and was so grateful to be there. It was really lovely to see how happy everyone was and Iโ€™m so pleased we were able to support Ed and the family so he could celebrate with them.

Jonโ€™s Google review:

I cannot recommend Bright Care highly enough. We booked Bright Care to help support my dad, who has dementia, during my daughterโ€™s wedding. From the very first contact, the whole process was handled with kindness, professionalism and care.

The admin side was excellent too โ€” everything was made simple, clear and stress-free, which made a huge difference to us as a family. Before the wedding, Bright Care arranged visits to understand my dadโ€™s needs properly, followed by a meet and greet so everyone felt comfortable before the day itself. Linda then went above and beyond. She collected my dad from the Borders, travelled with him to Dundee, supported him while staying in a hotel, helped him get up, dressed in his kilt and ready for the wedding, and looked after him throughout the day and evening. She then made sure he got safely back home afterwards. The care, attention and dignity shown to him throughout those few days was outstanding.

I genuinely do not think he could have been better looked after. Bright Care gave us peace of mind at a hugely important family occasion, allowing us to enjoy the wedding knowing my dad was safe, supported and treated with real compassion.

To Linda and everyone at Bright Care โ€” thank you. You made something that could have been incredibly stressful feel easy, calm and manageable. If you are thinking about getting support for someone you care about, give Bright Care a call. They have been absolutely amazing from start to finish.
