What inspired you to pursue a career in the elder care industry?

Caring has always come naturally to me. I feel I’m at my best when helping others. While studying for my degree, I worked part-time as an in-home Carer. I have fond memories of being a Carer, a job I loved. I enjoyed the autonomy of working alone and the chance to have a positive impact on other people’s lives. I learned so much from the people I cared for. There is something about the older generation that gives me a sense of comfort. I find I am drawn to their knowledge, unhurried pace and wisdom.

Following my graduation from university, I became a Visiting Officer for a local authority care company. Through this role, I realised my passion was for quality assurance, which led me to a position within a charity organisation as a Team Leader in a specialised dementia unit.

The fast-paced environment of a care home provided me with many learning opportunities, but I always felt the need to offer more personalised and one-to-one support. This led me to Bright Care in 2016. I found myself aligned with their values and embraced the teams’ ethos. Each team member is driven by genuine care. What truly resonated with me was the Bright Care commitment to providing personalised care, offering companionship through visits of two hours or more. Our support is tailored to the individual needs of the client and ensures they can remain in their own homes. I now can’t see elder care done any other way.

What has the last six months been like, becoming manager of your own branch?

The past six months have been a rollercoaster of excitement and challenges. From the initial thrill of stepping into this new role, to the weight of responsibility that comes with running a branch independently. I enjoyed the challenge of finding a new Care Manager to join our team. Our recruitment process is vigorous for all roles, but particularly so for management. Getting the right person for this role was non-negotiable. Welcoming Dawn, our new Care Manager, to our team in November was a significant milestone. Together, we have been actively building relationships within the local community and engaging with local companies and services.

The Branch Manager role has allowed me to implement my vision for the branch. My goal has been to create an excellent working environment for our team, one that focuses on working together, on growth, both personal and professional, with a shared commitment to excellent care. This focus will ensure that our clients receive nothing but the best care possible.

Meeting all of our existing clients, as well as bringing on board new clients, has been great. It has been exciting to see our care team grow. I love the diversity of my role; no two days are the same, and the fast pace keeps things exciting.

In January, we had our first care inspection as a new team; we received very good feedback. Achieving overall 5’s reflects the dedication and hard work from our team over such a short period of time. I am so proud of what we have accomplished together and looking forward to what lies ahead for us.

What is the process of assessing a client’s needs and matching these to a Bright Carer?

The client assessment process involves a meeting with myself or Dawn. We use paperwork as a guide, but our main goal is to get to know the client better. We try to understand their needs, their routine and how we can fit into their lives. The care planning process is personalised for each individual. We will do anything (within reason) that helps our clients to live an independent life at home. Some clients are looking for companionship, some need help with housekeeping, while others require support with medication. We create various packages of support, so we can give advice and suggestions on what we think would be helpful. We ask about preferences for matching, but we also consider who the client has in their life and who they get on well with. We have a great pool of Carers to match each client with, although we are always recruiting more excellent Carers. Our current Carers include a variety of people, ranging from students at Stirling University, who bring that ray of sunshine into people’s lives, to more experienced Carers, such as retired nurses and social workers.

After the client’s needs assessment is completed, we move on to the exciting part. We introduce the client to their Carer before starting the visits. This is an informal get together that usually takes place over a cup of tea. During this meeting, we can discuss the expectations and care plan, and put a face to a name before starting the service. I really enjoy this part, as I know that this is the beginning of a wonderful relationship. Having successfully matched many clients, I know the positive impact that a Carer can have on a person’s life. I feel like I’ve won the jackpot when discovering that a client and their Carer share even more in common than I initially thought.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career as a Carer?

I love my job, so I would encourage anyone to consider a career in care. It is incredibly rewarding and fulfilling, but it does require dedication. You need to have a genuine desire to support people. Having background knowledge of care and an education is important. Being a Carer is something that should come naturally to you, almost like it is your superpower. With the right values and attitude, you can learn on the job, and with the right company and support, you can progress (if you want to). Working in care is a rewarding career at any level.

Why should people choose Bright Care for their loved ones?

Choose Bright Care for our people, who are our “secret sauce”. We focus on getting the right people onboard. Those chosen are passionate Carers and take pride in what they do. They are people with oomph and a good attitude. By getting this part right, providing high-quality care comes naturally. Once we have completed the assessment stage, our clients will always know who will be visiting them – no strangers and no surprises. Our clients get the opportunity to build a good relationship with their Carer, who will arrive consistently each week and at the time and day you have requested. The service is fully managed, so we are here to take the stress away. The one-to-one support at home means the client is our priority. We use a real-time electronic communication system to track every visit.

How is Bright Care different from other care providers?

Bright Care strives to maintain the family-run feel. We have local offices, with small office teams who take each client through their journey, from the initial call to scheduling visits. Our office teams are encouraged to build strong working relationships with their colleagues. As a completely private company, we don’t have to compete for local authority contracts and we are not bound by 15-minute visits. Our clients can choose their preferred day and time, and they consistently receive care from the same Carer. Our two-hour packages have been successful in building the strong relationships we advocate. Our aim is to offer our clients the best care possible.
