The Care Assistant job role is incredibly rewarding and varied. Our care is tailored to the individual needs of our clients so every day is different. Working as a Care Assistant can involve practical help with personal care, light housekeeping, shopping and cooking as well as ongoing companionship, doing activities together and going on outings. At Bright Care we are committed to bringing joy to later years, whatever we are doing.
We spoke to Catriona, a Care Assistant in our Stirling branch to find out what her typical day involves. For anyone considering a career in care, her description should give you a clear picture of the Carerโs job role.
What was it that attracted you to the Bright Care Care Assistant job description?
When looking through job descriptions, Bright Care stood out to me as it was evident the pride they put into the care they provide. Having seen first-hand through my family experiences the impact care can have on the elderly, the emphasis Bright Care put on time spent at visits and building meaningful relationships was something that really resonated with me.
Before beginning at Bright Care I had no experience of working with the elderly, learning they provided the training academy reassured me that I would be well equipped for the job and made me feel more comfortable when applying.
What are the duties and responsibilities of a Carer at Bright Care?
Being a Carer at Bright Care is about supporting the elderly to remain living in their own home. The role includes assisting in a variety of everyday tasks such as personal care, meal preparation, medication support, light housework and assistance with getting out for shopping, appointments or social activities. However being a Carer at Bright Care it is just as important to provide companionship and build a meaningful relationship with the client and their families.
There are four core values at the heart of Bright Care to be aligned with as a Carer. โCan Doโ means being positive and proactive. โOwn Itโ involves taking responsibility and pride in our work. โChampion Peopleโ encourages supporting each other to grow, and โOne Teamโ means working together and having each otherโs backs.
What does a Care Assistant do on a typical day at Bright Care?
Although a typical day for me involves getting out to see my clients, the day to day activities can be very different. Some clients I am just seeing for a couple of hours whereas some visits can last longer. Activities during the visits also vary day to day, whilst some clients require a higher level of care some just need some companionship or to chat over a cup of tea. Whatever the task, it’s just nice to see my clients and hopefully help make a difference in their day. ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย

Can you tell us about a time when a visit with a client did not go as expected and how you dealt with it?
On one occasion I arrived at my clients house, when I entered they were not sitting in their usual spot and upon checking the other rooms I found them in bed as they were not feeling very well. For this client I usually provided companionship and prepared them some dinner. Instead of our usual routine I adapted to their needs that day and asked them what I could do to help. I prepared a light snack, topped up their water then had a chat with them. Although the visit wasnโt what I had expected when I arrived, being able to adapt to the clients needs allowed me to provide the care they required that day.
What do you enjoy most about working as a Carer?
There are many aspects of being a Carer I have really enjoyed since starting with Bright Care. I would have to say the thing I enjoy most about being a Carer is knowing I am making a positive impact on someone’s life. Being able to go into a visit, support my client with their needs for that day or just sitting with a cup of tea to have a chat with them, seeing how much of an impact my presence can have on their day is a feeling no other job has ever given me.
The most rewarding part of the care assistant job role is the profound difference you make daily, bringing joy and purpose, to a personโs later life. A day in the life of a Bright Care Assistant is about more than just a list of tasks. It’s about building meaningful relationships and offering support that truly matters, from practical help to emotional companionship.
