We asked Lee about her journey into the care industry, her experience of working for Bright Care and her plans for the new branch.

Can you tell us about your journey into care?

I was new to care when starting with Bright Care. I had started my working career supporting children in a nursery setting, supporting them to develop and prepare for the next stage in their lives. Building my reputation and knowledge within this particular care setting achieving the accomplishment of starting as a Nursery Assistant to becoming the Nursery Manager and gaining my SVQ levels 2 and 3 in Health and Social Care for Children and Young Adults.

After this I moved into retail management for a number of years, focusing on providing excellent customer service, supporting our staff and implementing training. Whilst working in retail, my gran was diagnosed with cancer and, between myself and my mum, we were able to support her to remain at home until she sadly passed away. We supported with preparing meals, taking her on outings, some aspects of personal care and prompting her medication.

After years of working to targets and KPI’s and profit, I wanted to have a role where I felt I was making a difference personally and that’s when I came across the position of a carer within Bright Care. It was a huge step for me as I hadn’t had experience with elderly in a work setting since completing a start to Health Care course at college at the tender age of 17. I knew that this would be an exciting and fulfilling opportunity to support our elderly generation in the community and the reviews I had read on Bright Care seemed to match my own values of how care should look and how a team should work.

What career opportunities have you had since starting with Bright Care?

I initially started as an hourly carer, supporting clients in the community and found it very rewarding building relationships with them and in effect gaining their trust and confidence in the service we offer. I have had the opportunity to really get to know our clients and build a really firm and genuine rapport with them. I find our client’s stories and experiences fascinating and love how animated they become when reliving these experiences through conversations. Within 3-4 months of starting with Bright Care, I was approached with a proposition of becoming a Care Manager (this was to support my previous Branch Manager during her pregnancy). I was trained on to how to handle leads, recruitment, planning, the structure of Bright Care among many other aspects of the role of a Care Manager. I stepped up to the challenge and found that I was able to engage more with our clients, ensuring each Care Plan was tailored to their individual needs and supporting them with meeting their “team”. It was lovely to introduce myself to them as their Care Manager and give them the security that they had a point of contact.

Throughout my time as Care Manager, I have grown in confidence and passion for the fantastic service we provide pushing me to continuously improve my own skills to ensure our clients only receive the best. I have now been given the opportunity to use everything I have learned over the last 5 years and bring our wonderful service to the Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire area as their Branch Manager. The company has been extremely supportive in allowing me to grow in my role and help my development.

What are you most looking forward to about opening the Aberdeen Bright Care Branch?

Being part of a community that supports our elderly generation and offering the same individual bespoke service that our existing Bright Care clients already receive in other areas. I am looking forward to building strong relationships and promoting what is on offer to those within the community as well as building a strong team who have the same passion for our clients that I do. In short I am looking forward to learning more about Aberdeen as a city and the residents of this strong community.
