Ageing Well – health and healthy lifestyle

Preparing healthy food for better overall health

The Bright Care Ageing Well series looks at all aspects of ageing well. It also considers what we can do as individuals to make a positive impact to our own health. This includes taking care of your overall health and leading a healthy lifestyle. Keeping active, eating a wholesome diet and getting enough sleep can contribute towards healthy living and ageing well.

Healthy habits from the blue zones

The blue zones are regions around the world where people are known to live much longer than average. Author and explorer Dan Buettner, has identified that within these regions, people tend to live significantly longer and lead healthier lives.

The healthy habits that people adopt who live in the blue zones offer insights into longevity and wellness. By incorporating some of the healthy habits from the blue zones into your lifestyle will help you to improve your overall health and assist with ageing well.

Diet – try to follow a plant-based diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains and reduce your meat consumption.

Lifestyle – incorporate physical activity into your daily life, including walking, gardening, or other forms of moderate exercise. Where possible, reduce your stress levels, get plenty of sleep and nurture strong social connections.

Community – having a sense of purpose in your life can improve your longevity. The feeling of belonging to a social support network can contribute to overall wellbeing.

Environment – getting out into nature, or going anywhere that encourages you to participate in physical activity will contribute to ageing well. Other important elements include having access to clean air, clean water and spaces for outdoor activities.

By adopting these healthy habits from the blue zones, you can help to enhance your quality of life, promote longevity and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. For more healthy habits for a healthy life, read our blog post on improving your overall health.
