How to stay healthy?

A good way to stay healthy in your later years is to adopt a holistic approach to your wellbeing. By focusing on your physical, mental and emotional health, you can age well. The benefits of healthy living include improved physical movement, greater brain health, increased energy and vitality, better emotional wellbeing and an enhanced immune system.

Daily life good habits

Below are our recommended good habits for how to stay healthy and thrive in your later years to give you improved longevity and a better quality of life.

Eat a balanced diet – focus on eating a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats. Limit processed foods, sugary snacks and an excessive intake of salt and saturated fats.

Stay hydrated – drink plenty of water throughout the day to maintain proper hydration. Limit sugary drinks and alcohol.

Remain active – take part in regular physical activities that you enjoy, such as walking, swimming, yoga, bike riding or dancing.

Brain health – keep your brain active and healthy by regularly challenging yourself with activities that require mental effort, such solving puzzles, learning a new skill or language and reading.

Get enough sleep – aim for 7-9 hours of good quality sleep each night. Establish a consistent sleep pattern and a relaxing bedtime routine.

Manage stress – practice stress-reduction techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, mindfulness, or Tai Chi. Whenever possible, find healthy outlets for stress.

Maintain social connections – nurture your relationships with friends and family. Stay connected through regular communication, either in-person or on the phone, and attend social gatherings.

Preventive healthcare – schedule regular check-ups with your doctor for screenings and vaccinations. Follow their recommendations for managing any chronic conditions.

Limit alcohol and avoid smoking – if you drink alcohol, do so in moderation. Avoid smoking and exposure to second hand smoke.

Mental health – prioritise self-care and seek support if you are struggling with stress, anxiety, depression, or other mental health issues. Talk to a mental health professional if needed.

Maintaining good health is a lifelong journey. Small, consistent changes can lead to significant improvements over time. Please read our blog for more information on how to maintain your overall health.
